Cement crown repair and Replacement-
The crown of the chimney is the
most important part of the exterior. The crown acts as the roof for the chimney. It sheds water away from the brick.
This prevents water from entering inside the structures interior. The crown is the cause behind most exterior chimney damage.
The building code states that a chimney must have a 4 inch thick cement crown with a 1 inch drip edge. (similar to the picture to the right)
This allows for the proper run off of water from the top of the chimney.
There are two ways to repair a chimney crown. Which one, depends on the extent of damage to the crown.
1. Replacement- If the cement crown is completely missing or is beyond repair. The only way to repair the crown is replacing it. In this case forms are placed on the outside brick edge. A type N mortar is mixed and poured into the forms. It takes a several days for the mortar to dry inside the forms. Once the mortar is dry we remove the forms leaving a nice new 4" thick code complaint crown.
2. Repair- If the cement crown is only cracked and is mostly intact. A synthetic crown sealer maybe applied to the surface. This paste that goes on dries to an elastic type coating that resembles dry mortar. This crown sealer comes with a 10 year warranty along with all of our other synthetic repair products.
