Though time man has tried to create fire. The caveman realized how important this tool was. We cook, keep warm and light our way. The task at hand though is how to start one. We are asked frequently what is the best way to start a fire and in general how you do start a fire. A fire can be started with either a fire starter or the old fashion way. Which ever you prefer it's your choice.
The fire starting log is basically made of compressed sawdust or paper material with an additional fuel agent added to it. You simply take one of the small compressed logs out of the package and then light it with a match or lighter. The product combustion will be rather fast. A good point of advice is to light it on both ends. Then simply place it under your arranged firewood. Preferably with the smaller wood closest to the burning starter.
The old fashion approach takes a little more time. The best way is with the tee-pee method. It consists of taking tinder and kindling to build a tee-pee.
What you will need:
- Newspaper (tinder)
-Kindling (small twigs)
-Bigger kindling (Small firewood)
-Firewood
- Take the newspaper and separate the sheets. Take one sheet and crumble it up into a small ball. This loose ball will act as the tinder and allow for adequate air flow into the fire.
- Take some small twigs and form a tee-pee shape as pictured above on top of the paper.
- A few pieces of small split firewood about the size of a dime in diameter should be propped up against the smaller kindling in a tee-pee shape as well.
- With a match or lighter light the paper in the center of the tee-pee. The burning paper will ignite the kindling and then that will ignite the next larger size kindling.
- After the fire has started place a larger size piece of firewood on the fire and sit back and relax next to nice warm fire.
The general principle to keep in mind is to start with tiny pieces of wood and then work up to the larger pieces. Another hint is to blow into the center of the fire. The added oxygen to the fire will help it become hotter and ignite faster.
Another good tip is to form a small diamond with your fingers as illustrated in the above picture. Hold the diamond up to your lips and blow through it. This small area increases the air flow and makes it like a small blast furnace.
These tips should get you started in becoming a fire starting master. Follow all these steps and you'll be enjoying that fire in no time.
